Congressman Rubén Hinojosa will cosponsor along with a bipartisan delegation of 50 Members of Congress to introduce the Military Opportunities for Mothers (MOM) Act, which will extend maternity leave for women serving in the military from 6 weeks to 12 weeks. The legislation will align access to maternity leave for female Service Members with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) guidelines available to federal employees. Like FMLA, the additional 6 weeks would be unpaid and would not cost tax payers additional money. The MOM Act already has more than 50 cosponsors from both sides of the aisle.

"Our women in the military are contributing more than ever before, with some already serving in combat positions that have just opened to them," said U.S. Rep, Hinojosa. "Extending maternity leave for these women is the least we can do for those who sacrifice so much for our country. Many of them face separation from their children when they are deployed, in some cases very far away from home. I believe extending maternity leave for them to recover from childbirth and giving them a little more time to spend with their newborn before they put on their military uniforms and get back to defending our nation is well deserved."
